Why?

After reading the discussion board for this week i've been thinking...why is it that our society would rather enjoy the pleasures of entertainment rather than gain the knowledge through education and experiences?Instead many people substitute their books for video games, sitcoms, movies, music. What is it in the entertainment industry that has captivated people so much that they begin to think that it is all life is about? Several people don't care to work hard to be able to grasp all concepts of life other than what is fed through a t.v. screen or radio station. Why? I want other people's views on this issue.

When the radio and TV were first invented, there was a hope that they would be used for educational purposes. For the most part, in our country, they have been largely co-opted and used for commercial purposes. Is the predominant influence of entertainment in our society and our relationship to it as consumers, related to its commercialization?

I would like to pose an opinion probably not many people in this generation have.
I never watch TV. I don't keep up with movies, and hate reading magazines about celebrities. I often find myself in situations where people are talking about an actor or some celebrity and I have no idea who they're talking about. Most of the time they make fun of me and say I don't know anything. It's always interesting because I don't care at all that I have no idea who they're talking about. Those people are not important to me, and I just can not get into the stupid reality shows on TV.
Anyway, my point is that people make judgments about my intelligence based on how much I know about that kind of stuff. I think it's funny, but it's pretty sad.
And I am not saying that I am not influenced by the media because I definitely am, and think it may be impossible to avoid, but I try not to let myself get caught up in the entertainment aspect, and feel an outcast for doing so.
